I feel like a stranger in my own land!
A couple of wedding functions and few observations later, this is what I learnt about the ever changing Indian mindset (I dunno whether it could be called progressive...):
Traditional South Indian Marriages serve sumptuous meals prepared by age-ole methods. Of late, people are experimenting with fusing foods from so many different regions into one plate (ahem, plantain leaf!). How about Mushroom Pulav for starter followed by Rumali Rotti and Paneer Butter Masala before the traditional Lentil? All these in a village where people still predominantly wear Dhotis and White Shirts for marriages...
Beetel leaves and Areca nuts have given way for Paan Beedas.
Ice Creams and Fruit Salad are served as post meal satisfiers!
Attitude of people attending these events also keep changing. 'Let us roll our sleeves and pitch in - in whatever way we could contribute towards the arrangements' attitude is tossed out of the window. People now visit marriage places in a picnic mood - once the main event is over, they pack their bags and off to their 'places of interest' visits instead of the usual grand 'getting together and beating the bejesus out of each other' by recounting embarrassing, enthralling stories from our childhood amidst peels of laughter...
Last but not the least, these affairs are getting quite costlier as time goes by (not to mention the walking jewel shops our women have become).
Having seen the full circle (15 years+ married life), I keep wondering what all this fuss is about...
Oh my, I am a lone ranger :-)
