Farmer blogger became a busy farmer for a month and Blogging suffered!
Motivated by a good rainy spell (so far so good), spent a month in the farms planting as much as I could and also started some infrastructure work to invite livestock to join me there. More about it on a later post though.
A while ago, the Agricultural University in my city started distributing subsidised terrace-garden kits to interested city folks. Subsidy came from the Horticultural Dept. of my state.
A typical kit contains 20 grow bags and coco-peats (pressed coconut husk), a plastic sheet about 15*9 feet to water proof the surface, a sprayer, a 5 L water can, spades, seeds, bio fertilisers and bio-pesticides. Unfortunately it also contains a few Kilos of Urea based chemical fertilisers though I don't use them and don't need them :-(
I set up infrastructure for climbers at a nominal cost (8 feet iron pipes fixed along the inner sides of the terrace netted with low cost plastic-coated cables that criss cross the poles), bought three kits and after a month of constant gardening, started reaping the benefits already! Verities of Greens, Tomatoes, Brinjals, Lady finger, Beans, Cluster Beans, Cucumbers, Radish, Ash gourd to name a few!!!
I water them once in a couple of days. That's all they need!!!
See how they look :-)
'From farm gate to the dining table' - I have altered the route to read 'From roof top to the dining table'!!!
I distribute the produce to my friends and relatives; the surplus produce go to a corner-store in my neighbourhood :-)
